2005 Leadership Development Award winner
The Junior League of Miami
The Junior League of Miami won the 2005 Leadership Development Award for the Girls Advocacy Project, a program through which members receive leadership training to benefit girls in their community.
This program is designed to prepare members to encourage and assist the girls of the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Detention System in seeking positive change.
Through this program, League members are trained extensively by the Juvenile Justice System and local community partners to prepare them for mentoring roles with girls in the local detention center. Members lead educational group discussions to provide support for the girls and assist in improving the decisions they make in their daily lives.
In 2006, the Girls Advocacy Project received funding for expansion and was incorporated as a Florida nonprofit corporation. The Miami, Fort Myers, and Palm Beaches Leagues are among its official partners.
