The Junior League of Miami

The Junior League of Miami won the 2005 Leadership Development Award for the Girls Advocacy Project, a program through which members receive leadership training to benefit girls in their community.

Program Goal

This program is designed to prepare members to encourage and assist the girls of the Miami-Dade County Juvenile Detention System in seeking positive change.

Program Description

Through this program, League members are trained extensively by the Juvenile Justice System and local community partners to prepare them for mentoring roles with girls in the local detention center. Members lead educational group discussions to provide support for the girls and assist in improving the decisions they make in their daily lives.

Results/Outcomes

In 2006, the Girls Advocacy Project received funding for expansion and was incorporated as a Florida nonprofit corporation. The Miami, Fort Myers, and Palm Beaches Leagues are among its official partners.
